Titanium Freeform Surfaces and Tool-Axis Access

Freeform parts such as impellers, turbine components and contoured housings can use 3-axis, 3+2-axis or 5-axis routes selected from the 3D model. Fixed-angle faces use 3+2 positional machining, while continuously changing surfaces use simultaneous 5-axis machining to maintain tool orientation. Programming first checks tool-to-fixture interference. Undercuts and obstructed areas may require multiple setups, special tools or EDM.

Titanium Multi-Angle Mounting Faces

For titanium brackets and housings with inclined mounting faces and spatial holes, suitable parts can have multiple faces completed in one setup, reducing the effects of realignment on hole-position relationships. Fixture obstruction and part orientation determine which faces can share a setup. Specify common inspection datums for hole patterns and mounting faces on the drawing.

Titanium Blades and Thin-Wall Distortion

Minimum impeller blade thickness is 0.6 mm, with a maximum impeller diameter of 800 mm. Titanium low thermal conductivity concentrates heat at the cutting edge. Thinner blades are more prone to chatter and distortion. Blade geometry, tool strategy and clamping determine whether this thickness can be machined consistently. Thin walls are evaluated against a minimum metal wall thickness of 0.5 mm, requiring blank pretreatment, stress-relief aging and optimized machining parameters.

3D Profile Inspection for Titanium Parts

Complex-surface profile capability is 0.02 mm, checked against the 3D model using CMM measurement, 3D scanning or profile inspection. Establish model revision, datums and measurement scope before ordering so results correspond to the model. Third-party inspection report requirements can be evaluated according to the order.

Applications

Aerospace Impellers and Spatial Mounting Brackets

Impellers and spatial mounting brackets require low weight and strength, making titanium high specific strength and temperature resistance relevant material-selection properties. Five-axis machining adjusts tool direction along blade surfaces and inclined mounting faces to produce blades, spatial holes and multi-face brackets. Flight and spacecraft uses require evaluation against drawings and requirements.

Medical Joint and Orthopedic Contour Parts

Joint implant components and orthopedic contoured connectors combine curved profiles with connection features in different directions. Titanium biocompatibility is one material-selection consideration for medical parts. Five-axis machining supports tool access to these profiles and features from multiple directions. Implant uses require evaluation against drawings and requirements.

Contoured Marine Instrument Housings

Acoustic instrument housings and marine sensor housings operate in seawater, making titanium seawater corrosion resistance a primary material-selection factor. Where curved forms coexist with multi-angle mounting faces, 5-axis machining produces spatial profiles and mounting features from different directions. Subsea uses require evaluation against drawings and requirements.

Multi-Angle Robot End-Effector Connectors

End-effector connectors and multi-angle flanges generally use titanium alloys to reduce weight while meeting strength requirements. Inclined mounting faces, spatial holes and curved transitions require model-based evaluation of tool approach orientations. Conventional flat parts and simple rotational parts are better suited to 3-axis machining or turning without unnecessary 5-axis complexity.

Why Choose Us

Quality Systems and Equipment Support

We operate under ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C quality systems and use equipment from DMG, Mazak, Matsuura and Brother to support titanium impellers, freeform parts and multi-angle brackets.

Coordinating Five-Axis Parts and Supporting Operations

Factory machining coverage extends from small connectors to large structural parts. Titanium 5-axis parts can be coordinated with milling, turning, hole machining, deburring, blasting and polishing in the same project, discussing surface machining and post-processing requirements together.

Equipment Configured for Accuracy Requirements

Our equipment spans four tiers from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe and the United States, with machines matched to part and operation accuracy requirements to balance quality and cost. Blade surfaces, mounting faces and general structural surfaces on the same titanium part often need different accuracy. Matching equipment accordingly helps control cost more effectively than using high-precision machines for every operation.

Material Certificates and Confidentiality

Material certificates can be supplied according to the order to verify titanium grade. An NDA can be signed when confidentiality is needed for sensitive model data in impellers, medical contoured parts and similar projects.

Surface Inspection Records and Sample Approval

CMM measurement, 3D scanning or profile inspection scope can be agreed for impellers, thin blades and complex profiles, with model revision and datums defined. FAI reports can be supplied for first articles when needed. Batch production follows sample approval.

FAQ

When does a titanium part need 5-axis instead of 3-axis machining?

Five-axis machining suits inclined mounting faces, spatial holes, continuously changing surfaces and blades, allowing tool access from several directions and reducing setup changes. Fixed-angle faces can use 3+2 machining. Simple flat or rotational parts can use 3-axis machining or turning. Undercuts and obstructed areas may need multiple setups, special tools or EDM.

What affects thin titanium blade thickness and distortion?

Minimum impeller blade thickness is 0.6 mm. Titanium has low thermal conductivity, and blades have low rigidity. Tool overhang, clamping and material-removal volume can cause chatter and distortion. Blade shape, machining orientation and tool strategy determine whether this thickness can be achieved consistently.

How is a complex titanium surface profile inspected?

Complex-surface profile capability is 0.02 mm, checked against the 3D model using CMM measurement, 3D scanning or profile inspection. State model revision, datums and measurement scope in the order so results match the model. Third-party inspection reports depend on order requirements.

Should I choose TC4 or TA2 for a titanium impeller?

The choice depends on loads, temperature and media. TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) has higher strength and is commonly used for demanding load-bearing or structural parts. TA2 is commercially pure titanium with lower strength and good formability and corrosion resistance. We machine to the drawing grade and can supply material certificates according to the order. Approximate standards are not treated as fully equivalent.

Which heat-treatment condition should I specify for a 5-axis titanium part?

Heat treatment condition follows the drawing or material standard and affects hardness, residual stress and cutting conditions. For thin blades and walls needing stress relief, specify treatment timing and the condition for dimensional acceptance. These determine roughing and finishing schedules. Heat treatment reports depend on order requirements.

What should I provide for a titanium 5-axis quote?

Provide 2D/3D drawings or models in STEP, IGES, STP or DWG format, or dimensioned PDF, together with material grade and supply condition, quantity, tolerances and intended use. Quotation focuses on titanium cutting difficulty, surface and thin-blade geometry, setup count, profile, surface finish and inspection scope. The MOQ is 1 piece, prototypes usually take 3-7 days and standard orders 10-15 days depending on complexity and quantity.

Can aerospace or spacecraft titanium parts be assessed?

Yes. Part orientation, surface profiles, material and acceptance documents are evaluated against drawings and requirements. Your design requirements determine whether the part is flight-critical or intended for spacecraft use. Submit models and relevant quality requirements.
