Titanium Shaft and Bore Coaxial Datums

Bores, outside diameters and bearing seats on titanium sleeves can share a functional datum for turning and inspection. Coaxiality between shaft/bore features or stepped outside diameters can reach 0.012 mm. This depends partly on whether bores and outside diameters can be completed in one setup, which is affected by shape and clamping length. Verify mating shaft diameter tolerance, roughness and circular runout together from a common datum.

Titanium Long Shafts and Thin Sleeves

Slender titanium shafts can reach L/D 15:1 and a maximum turning length of 2000 mm. Length, rigidity and straightness guide evaluation of steady rests, follower rests or staged turning. Minimum metal wall thickness can reach 0.5 mm. Suitability for titanium sleeves depends on material condition, structure and clamping method, with blank pretreatment, stress-relief aging and optimized machining parameters required.

Titanium Turned Grooves and Shaft-End Threads

Turned retaining-ring grooves, seal grooves and similar features have a minimum width of 0.5 mm, depending on depth and tool choice. O-ring grooves start at 1.0 mm width with a depth tolerance of 0.01 mm. State groove roughness and burr requirements on the drawing. Internal threads can start at M1.4 and external threads at M2.0. Functional threads use go/no-go or thread ring gauges and can be accepted to requirements for freedom from crossed or damaged threads and burrs.

Titanium Turning and Boring Surface Finish

Outside and inside surface roughness on the same titanium sleeve have different specifications: turned outside diameters can achieve Ra 0.8 um and bored holes Ra 1.6 um. Specify roughness separately for bearing seats, sealing diameters and bore mating surfaces, considering dimensional tolerances and datums together. Critical Ra requirements are verified with a surface roughness tester.

Applications

Marine Sensor Sleeves and Flanges

Sensor sleeves and end flanges have prolonged seawater exposure, making titanium seawater corrosion resistance a primary material-selection factor. Turning relates sleeve bores, outside diameters, end faces and sealing grooves to one rotational axis, helping control relationships between sensor locating bores and sealing surfaces. Subsea uses require evaluation against drawings and requirements.

Chemical Valve Stems and Seats

Valve stems and valve seats contacting corrosive media can use titanium, with grade selected for media, temperature and concentration. Roundness and circular runout of stem mating diameters, and coaxiality between seat contact faces and bores, affect valve motion and sealing contact. Sealing contact faces can be considered for Ra 0.8 um sealing-face roughness, with flatness and inspection methods established together.

Medical Screws and Instrument Shafts

Orthopedic screws and instrument shafts often use titanium, with biocompatibility being one material-selection consideration for medical parts. Screw shanks, threads and ends need a common axis. Threads can be checked with go/no-go or ring gauges against requirements for freedom from crossed or damaged threads and burrs. Where instrument shaft diameters require polishing, specify appearance standards and cleanliness. Implant uses require evaluation against drawings and requirements.

Racing Bushings and Link Pins

Suspension bushings and link pins needing weight reduction commonly use titanium alloys for high specific strength. Bushing inside and outside diameters and pin mating journals are rotational surfaces. Roundness capability is 0.006 mm. Specify mating dimensions, roundness and roughness separately on the drawing according to assembly function.

Why Choose Us

Turning Equipment and Quality Systems

Our quality systems include ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C, with equipment from DMG, Mazak, Matsuura and Brother. Rotational parts can use the Mazak i-100S turn-mill center with a second spindle, suitable for titanium sleeves with limited milling or drilling features.

From Small Sleeves to Large Rotational Parts

Factory machining coverage extends from small connectors to large structural parts. Rotational parts ranging from precision sleeves to long shafts and large-diameter flanges can be turned to drawings. Post-processing scope such as deburring, blasting or polishing is defined together.

Equipment Configured for Accuracy Requirements

Our equipment spans four tiers from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe and the United States. Machines are matched to part and operation accuracy requirements. Bearing seats and sealing diameters on titanium shafts differ in accuracy needs from general shoulders and end faces. Each receives suitable equipment to balance quality and cost.

Material Certificates and Mating-Surface Post-Processing

Material certificates can be supplied according to the order to verify TC4 or TA2 grade and condition. If mating surfaces such as bearing seats or sealing diameters need blasting or polishing, define the scope during process review so dimensional effects of post-processing are considered before machining.

Feature-Based Inspection Methods

Roundness, roughness and threads on shafts can use roundness testers, roughness testers and go/no-go or thread ring gauges respectively. CMM and FAI reports follow the order. Batch production follows sample approval, providing records for critical mating dimensions.

FAQ

How should I define coaxiality for a titanium shaft and bore?

Use the actual assembly axis, generally selecting a bearing-seat outside diameter or locating bore as a common datum, then define coaxiality and circular runout. Coaxiality of shaft/bore features or stepped outside diameters can reach 0.012 mm, as can shaft circular runout. For high-precision rotational parts, coaxiality or runout is clearer than concentricity alone. Whether bores and outside diameters share a setup affects results. Identify datums and inspection methods during inquiry.

What if a titanium bore needs a finer finish than Ra 1.6 um?

Honing can achieve bore roughness of Ra 0.8 um and is commonly used for hydraulic or sliding bores. Bored and reamed internal surfaces are Ra 1.6 um, with reaming often used for locating and pin holes. Honing suitability depends on bore diameter and length. Identify diameter, depth and surface requirements on the drawing.

What straightness can a long titanium shaft hold?

Straightness can reach 0.01 mm and cylindricity 0.011 mm over a length of 1030 mm, with maximum turning length of 2000 mm. Actual results depend on material, length and heat treatment condition. High length-to-diameter ratios need separate distortion and chatter evaluation. Slender-shaft capability extends to L/D 15:1.

Which titanium grade and delivery condition suit a turned shaft or sleeve?

Higher-load shafts and pins generally use TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V). TA2 (CP Ti) can be considered for sleeves focused on corrosion resistance and formability with lower strength requirements. Loads, media and design standards determine the choice. Heat treatment or stress-relief condition follows drawings or material standards. Specify the condition for dimensional acceptance because straightness and roundness of slender shafts and thin sleeves may change with condition. Material certificates can be supplied according to the order.

Can titanium turned parts achieve IT5 or IT6 accuracy?

Yes. IT5/IT6 suits high-accuracy features such as shaft and bore diameters. Drawing- and requirement-based CNC turning with necessary secondary operations such as grinding achieves the target accuracy. Fits can be specified as h6/h7 shafts and H7/H8 bores, with the route determined by the part drawing.

What should I send for a titanium turning quote?

Dimensioned 2D drawings are most important. A 3D model in STEP, IGES or STP format can supplement them. A model alone does not establish tolerances, fits, thread standards or roughness, which must be supplied separately. Include material grade and supply condition, quantity and intended use. Quotation focuses on titanium cutting difficulty, shaft/bore fits, length-to-diameter ratio, support, roughness and reporting scope. The MOQ is 1 piece, prototypes usually take 3-7 days and standard orders 10-15 days depending on complexity and quantity. An NDA can be signed when needed.

Can you quote a titanium implant screw from a drawing?

Yes, a drawing-based evaluation is possible. Screw shank diameter, thread size, go/no-go or ring-gauge inspection, material certificates and acceptance documents can be established during review. Thread surfaces can be accepted to requirements for freedom from crossed or damaged threads and burrs. Implant suitability requires item-by-item evaluation against your part requirements. Include relevant quality-document requirements.
