Nickel Alloy Pocket and Slot Milling

Pockets and slots in valve blocks, pump housings and similar parts can reach a depth-to-width ratio of 4:1, increasing to 5:1 with extended tools. Nickel alloys readily work harden and concentrate cutting heat, while longer tool extension reduces rigidity. Tooling plans and chip evacuation space for deep, narrow cavities must therefore be established together with the geometry.

Nickel Alloy Datum Faces and Hole Patterns

Relationships between mounting faces and hole patterns on flange or valve blocks determine bolt-hole alignment and sealing-face location. Hole-pattern position can reach 0.015 mm and mounting-face flatness 0.02 mm over machining areas up to 1030 x 1030 mm. Hole diameter, spacing, count and datum selection affect acceptance. Specify the inspection method on the drawing as well.

Thin-Wall Nickel Alloy Milling Control

Minimum metal wall thickness is 0.5 mm, requiring blank pretreatment, stress-relief aging and optimized machining parameters. Whether this thickness suits a nickel alloy part depends on grade, supply condition, wall height and clamping method. Identify thin-wall locations and target thicknesses on the drawing.

Nickel Alloy Internal Corners and Milled Finish

Minimum end-milled internal radius is R0.5 mm, increasing to R1.0 mm for cavities 40 mm deep. Perfectly sharp corners require EDM or a design adjustment. Standard milled surfaces are Ra 3.2 um, while finish-milled mounting and contact faces can reach Ra 1.6 um. Tool-mark direction and tool access on deep-cavity walls affect the actual finish. Identify surfaces with specified roughness on the drawing.

Applications

Flow and Valve Blocks for Chemical Analyzers

A valve block or analyzer flow block contacts chemical media. Nickel alloy grade selection depends on media type, concentration and temperature. Flow geometry is the challenge: pockets, cross-holes and internal passages must align. Specify internal burr and cleanliness requirements at cross-holes on the drawing. Minimum internal passage width is 3.0 mm, and cross-hole deburring is within the machining scope.

Flange Connection Blocks for Oil and Gas Equipment

A flange connection block or valve mounting block requires controlled relationships between flange mounting faces, hole patterns and sealing grooves. Minimum O-ring groove width is 1.0 mm with a depth tolerance of 0.01 mm; hole-pattern position is 0.015 mm. These dimensions determine whether seals and bolt holes locate according to drawings. Subsea or other special uses require evaluation against drawings and requirements.

Aero-Engine Accessory Mounts

An accessory mounting bracket or sensor mount near an engine hot zone often uses nickel alloys for high-temperature strength. Drawings define the grade and heat treatment condition. These parts primarily contain mounting faces, slots and threaded-hole patterns. Internal threads can start at M1.4 and be checked with go/no-go gauges. Aero-engine-related uses require evaluation against drawings and requirements.

Corrosion-Resistant Pump Housings and Covers

A pump housing or pump cover is a non-rotational housing whose pump cavity, mating face and connection holes are suited to milling. Mating-face flatness can reach 0.02 mm over machining areas up to 1030 x 1030 mm. Drawings define connection-hole diameters, spacing and datums. Pumped media and temperature determine the nickel alloy grade, with selection based on media information.

Why Choose Us

Quality Systems and Machining Equipment

We hold ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C certifications and use equipment from DMG, Mazak, Matsuura and Brother. Machining and dimensional inspection of nickel alloy cavities, mounting faces and hole-pattern parts are planned within these quality systems and equipment capabilities.

Coordinated Milling, Hole and Thread Operations

Factory coverage extends from small connectors to large structural parts approximately 2600 mm long. Milling, hole machining, threads and deburring on the same part can be evaluated together during quotation. Features requiring IT5/IT6 can use secondary processes such as grinding, EDM or wire EDM.

Equipment Matched to Accuracy, Quality and Cost

Machines are selected from four equipment tiers from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe and the United States according to part and operation accuracy requirements. Demanding hole patterns and mounting faces on nickel alloy parts differ from general external geometry and clearance slots. Matching equipment separately balances machining quality and cost.

Inspection Documents according to Order Requirements

Hole-pattern position and flatness can be checked using CMMs and height gauges, while roughness uses a surface roughness tester. CMM reports, FAI reports in the customer’s format and material certificates can be supplied according to the order when required.

Sample Approval and Confidentiality

Samples are made before batches, with production following your approval. Samples usually take 3-7 days. An NDA can be signed as needed for drawings of unpublished designs.

FAQ

How do pocket depth and internal corners affect a nickel alloy milling quote?

The cavity depth-to-opening ratio and internal radii determine tool extension and the need for extended tools, affecting setup planning and machining time. Nickel alloys work harden and wear tools relatively quickly. Machining hours for deep, narrow cavities cannot be estimated by a fixed multiplier; quotes use the specific model.

Can a nickel alloy part be milled with 0.5 mm walls?

0.5 mm is the minimum metal wall thickness, requiring blank pretreatment, stress-relief aging and optimized machining parameters. Suitability for nickel alloy parts depends on grade, supply condition, wall height and clamping method. Identify thin-wall locations and target thicknesses on the drawing for evaluation.

Which milled features can be held to +/-0.003 mm or IT5/IT6?

+/-0.003 mm applies to precision-machined features, such as critical dimensions and mating faces on small parts under 100 mm. Large parts over 500 mm use +/-0.05 mm as a reference, subject to material and setup evaluation. IT5/IT6 capability is established, with CNC and necessary secondary routes selected against drawings and requirements. Secondary operations can include grinding, EDM or wire EDM.

Which material state should pocket and hole dimensions be accepted in?

State whether acceptance dimensions apply in the supplied condition or after heat or surface treatment. Treatment changes dimensions, affecting allowances and finishing needs. Specify grade, material standard and supply condition separately. Grades such as Inconel 718 and Hastelloy C-276 cannot be interchanged by name. Material certificates follow order-specified requirements.

How are a milled sealing face and its hole pattern inspected?

Hole-pattern position and flatness can be inspected using CMMs and height gauges, roughness using a surface roughness tester, and threads using go/no-go or ring gauges. Identify datum faces, inspection methods and surfaces requiring specified roughness on the drawing. Report format and scope follow order requirements.

What information is needed to quote a nickel alloy pocketed part?

A quote requires 2D/3D drawings, grade and material standard, supply and heat treatment conditions, quantity, tolerances and intended use. Identify critical pockets, slots and surface requirements on the drawing. STEP, IGES, STP, DWG or dimensioned PDF files are accepted. Orders start at 1 piece, samples take 3-7 days and batch lead times are usually 10-15 days depending on complexity and quantity.

Can you assess nickel alloy parts for flight-critical or subsea service?

These parts can be evaluated against drawings and requirements. For connection blocks or mounts for flight-critical or subsea use, provide material standards, service conditions and acceptance specifications. Factory quality-system certifications such as ISO 9001 and GJB9001C are not equivalent to industry approval of a part or product.
