Radial Features on Turned Nickel Alloy Bodies

On nickel alloy rotational parts with side holes and flats, the outside-diameter axis is the positional datum for side features. The Mazak I-100S has a second spindle and can mill flats and drill side holes on the same machine after turning, reducing datum changes from reclamping. Single-setup feasibility depends on clamping faces and the space available for tools to approach side features.

Nickel Alloy Turning and Interrupted Milling

Nickel alloys readily work harden. Tools experience different loads during continuous outside-diameter turning and interrupted cutting of slots or sides, while supply condition changes cutting difficulty. Allowances and operation sequence follow drawing datums and part condition. Finish turning of mating features must also consider the effects of subsequent milling on machined surfaces.

Cross-Holes and Sealing Features in Nickel Alloy

Radial-to-axial hole intersections and threaded holes near sealing grooves can retain internal entry burrs that affect seal installation. Cross-hole deburring is available. Minimum O-ring groove width is 1.0 mm with a depth tolerance of 0.01 mm. Identify burr locations and cleanliness requirements on the drawing.

Inspection of Turned and Milled Nickel Alloy Features

Rotational datums, side-hole positions and surface roughness are inspected separately. A Hexagon Inspector CMM can verify side-hole and hole-pattern positions relative to the outside-diameter axis. Coaxiality of 0.012 mm and hole-pattern position of 0.015 mm use drawing datums. Turned outside diameters are Ra 0.8 um, and finish-milled faces and bored holes Ra 1.6 um. Critical surfaces use a roughness tester, and threads use go/no-go or ring gauges.

Applications

Instrument Fittings for Oil, Gas and Chemical Processing

An instrument fitting or sensor body in oil, gas or chemical processes contacts corrosive media. Nickel alloy selection depends on media, concentration and temperature. These parts generally have sealing cylinders and pipe threads turned first, followed by milled side sensor ports or flats. Specify the applicable NPT, BSP, G or PT pipe thread standard on the drawing. The relationship between side mounting ports and sealing cylinders is referenced to the outside-diameter axis.

Pump Shafts and Valve Stems

A pump shaft or valve stem works in a wetted environment, with grade selected for the media. Keyways, flats and transverse pin holes must remain related to bearing and sealing seats. Shaft circular runout is 0.012 mm and minimum keyway width 1.0 mm. For shafts with high length-to-diameter ratios, support and distortion control require separate drawing-based evaluation.

Engine-Adjacent Fuel and Hydraulic Fittings

A fuel connector or hydraulic fitting near an engine operates at elevated temperatures. Selection of a heat-resistant nickel alloy requires grade and heat treatment condition to meet drawings. Threads, shoulders and sealing cylinders are turned before radial mounting holes or wrench flats are milled, maintaining relationships between rotational fits and side connections. Aviation and other safety-related uses require drawing- and requirement-based evaluation.

Conveyor Roller End Connectors for High-Temperature Furnaces

A conveyor roller end connector or keyed shaft end is exposed to prolonged furnace heat. Furnace temperature and load determine whether a heat-resistant nickel alloy is needed and which grade to use. Shaft ends and mating shoulders are turned before keyways or flats are milled, considering drive features and rotational fits in one process plan.

Why Choose Us

Quality Systems and Turning and Milling Equipment

The factory is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C quality systems. The Mazak I-100S turn-mill center has a second spindle and handles side holes, flats and slots on rotational parts, supported by machining centers from DMG, Matsuura and Brother.

Turning and Milling Support from Small Connectors to Large Structures

The factory has equipment for small connectors through large structural parts. Rotational parts of this type generally involve turning, milling, drilling, threads and deburring, which can be evaluated together.

Equipment Matched to Accuracy, Quality and Cost

Machines are selected from four equipment tiers from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe and the United States according to part and operation accuracy requirements. Rotational mating surfaces and less demanding side features can be assigned separately to balance machining quality and cost.

Material Certificates Matched to Grades

Nickel-base, nickel-chromium and nickel-copper materials have different grades and procurement standards. Material certificates can be supplied according to the order, matching its specified grade and standard. Requirements such as SGS environmental compliance reports depend on material and industry requirements.

Sample Approval before Batch Production

Samples are made before batches and usually take 3-7 days. Production follows your approval. CMM reports and FAI reports in the customer’s format are supplied according to order requirements. An NDA can be signed for confidential drawings.

FAQ

When does a nickel alloy part benefit from combined turning and milling?

Combined turning and milling helps when rotational surfaces must remain related to side holes, flats, keyways or flange hole patterns. Operations on the same turn-mill center allow side features to reference the outside-diameter axis directly, reducing datum changes from reclamping. Parts dominated by rotational surfaces or planes without side features are more directly handled by turning or milling alone.

Can every side hole and turned feature be finished in one setup?

Not necessarily. Obstructed clamping faces, tool-to-workpiece interference, feature direction and depth affect setup count. If jaws block a side-hole entrance, the clamping position must change or the part must be reclamped. Dimension side holes relative to the outside-diameter axis on the drawing so setups and datums can be planned.

Which datum should side holes and flats be dimensioned from?

Use the outside-diameter axis and an end face or shoulder face as datums where appropriate, allowing machining and inspection to share references and reduce datum changes. If dimensions reference blank or clamping faces, establish datum transfer before quotation.

Should the alloy condition be stated for turned and milled dimensions?

Yes. Grade, material standard, supply condition and heat treatment condition are separate information and should be specified separately. If heat treatment follows machining, state whether rotational fit diameters and side-hole positions are accepted before or after treatment. Dimensional changes after treatment affect allowances and finishing plans.

How are burrs handled where cross-holes meet a passage?

Cross-hole deburring is available. Identify access inside enclosed structures, hole-entry locations and cleanliness acceptance requirements on the drawing. If cleanliness or leak testing is specified, state it during inquiry so acceptance methods are agreed before quotation.

What drives the price of a nickel alloy turn-mill component?

Quotation depends on grade and condition, the number of rotational surfaces and side holes, hole-intersection and slot geometry, setups, specified tolerances and inspection scope. Nickel alloy cutting difficulty must be evaluated together with geometry rather than using a fixed machining-hour multiplier.

What should I send for a quote, and what are the MOQ and lead time?

Provide 2D/3D drawings in STEP, IGES, STP or DWG format, or dimensioned PDF, together with material grade and standard, supply and heat treatment conditions, quantity, tolerances and intended use. Orders start at 1 piece, samples take 3-7 days and batch lead times are usually 10-15 days depending on complexity and quantity.
