Overview

When a small brass part combines angled holes, intersecting faces and continuous curved surfaces, 5-axis machining can reduce setup changes and help maintain the positional relationships between features in different directions. XCM CNC uses DMG, Matsuura and other machines to produce RF connector bodies, instrument housings and precision adjustment components, with a 5-axis machining envelope up to 800 x 600 x 900 mm. The factory is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C. The MOQ is 1 piece, with samples in 3-7 days and batch orders in 10-15 days. Include a 3D model with your inquiry and identify the datum faces to be retained and surface-profile requirements. Equipment listed for this machining service includes DMG 80mono, Mazak I-100S, Matsuura MX-520, Brother / Taichung / Qiao Feng machining centers.

custom brass 5 axis machined parts

Brass 5-Axis Machining Envelope and Single-Setup Multi-Face Work

Brass 5-axis machining at XCM CNC covers parts up to 800 x 600 x 900 mm. Parts within 600 x 1200 x 500 mm can have several faces machined in one clamping, so angled ports and mounting faces share the same datum. Hole position across these faces is held to 0.015 mm, and perpendicularity between faces to 0.02 mm / 1000 mm.

Brass 5-Axis Contour Profile Tolerance on Freeform Surfaces

Freeform brass surfaces are machined to a profile tolerance of 0.02 mm using 3-axis, 3+2-axis or simultaneous 5-axis toolpaths, depending on the surface. Internal corners go down to R0.5 mm, and to R1.0 mm in cavities 40 mm deep. Profiles are measured on the Hexagon Inspector Classic 06.08.06 CMM or by 3D scan against the CAD model. Callouts follow ISO 1101 / ASME Y14.5 profile-of-surface.

Brass Thin-Wall and Fine-Feature Limits in 5-Axis Milling

Brass housings can be milled with walls down to 0.5 mm, ribs down to 0.8 mm at an 8:1 height-to-width ratio, and slots as narrow as 0.3 mm. Thin brass walls spring back after the final pass. Stress relief on the blank and light finishing passes keep that deflection within the drawing tolerance.

Brass Angled Ports, Micro-Holes and Undercut Machining

Tilting the spindle lets the tool drill angled ports square to their own axis, which keeps the drill from walking at the hole entrance. Holes go down to 0.2 mm drilled and 0.3 mm milled, and countersinks are cut at 90 degrees +/-0.1 degrees. Undercuts and cavities up to a 4:1 depth-to-width ratio are machined directly, extending to 5:1 with long-reach tools.

Applications

Brass RF Connector Bodies with Angled Ports

Typical parts: RF connector body, angled-port housing

Angled ports and external curved surfaces on RF housings face different directions. Machining them in several setups can accumulate port-location errors. Five-axis machining completes multiple faces in one setup so the ports share a common datum.

Relevant capabilities: Multi-face single-setup envelope of 600 x 1200 x 500 mm and hole position of 0.015 mm.

Brass Instrument Housings with Interfaces in Multiple Directions

Typical parts: Instrument housing, intersecting-port housing

Mounting faces, side interfaces and curved surfaces intersect on instrument housings, often with very thin walls. Thin-wall distortion is the main machining challenge, requiring stress relief of the blank followed by staged finish milling.

Relevant capabilities: Minimum wall thickness of 0.5 mm and face-to-face perpendicularity of 0.02 mm / 1000 mm.

Compact Brass Manifolds with Multi-Directional Passages

Typical parts: Compact manifold block, multi-port valve block

A small block can have passage openings in several directions, with passages intersecting internally. Spindle tilt aligns the tool with angled holes, and intersections can be deburred. Leak or pressure-test scope requires a separate agreement.

Relevant capabilities: Minimum drilled hole diameter of 0.2 mm, minimum internal passage width of 3.0 mm and cross-hole deburring.

Precision Brass Adjustment Components with Curved Profiles

Typical parts: Adjustment knob core, contoured guide block

Inclined contact faces and curved guideways directly determine the feel and smoothness of adjustment. Curved surfaces are machined to the CAD model, then checked by CMM or 3D scanning against the profile.

Relevant capabilities: Surface profile of 0.02 mm and polished surfaces at Ra 0.2 um.

Why Choose Us

Quality Systems and Complex-Surface Inspection Support

We operate under ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C quality systems, with machining equipment from DMG, Mazak, Matsuura and Brother and measuring equipment from Hexagon and Leader. CMM, 3D scanning or profile inspection can be arranged within the order scope to verify the specified curved surfaces and multi-directional features.

Multi-Directional Machining across Different Part Sizes

From small connectors to large structural parts, we evaluate milling and required secondary operations against the drawing. For angled brass interfaces, intersecting features and curved surfaces, equipment travel, fixture clearance and part orientation determine whether a 5-axis route is suitable.

Tiered Equipment Strategy for Low-Cost CNC Machining, Quality-Assured Production

XCM CNC uses four tiers of equipment from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe and the United States. Operations with less demanding accuracy requirements run on mainland Chinese or Taiwanese machines, while high-precision features use imported equipment such as DMG and Mazak. Machines are allocated according to the accuracy the part requires, avoiding equipment with higher hourly costs for simple work and reducing machining costs while meeting drawing requirements.

Quotes for Both 3-Axis and 5-Axis Routes

Multi-face brass parts do not always require 5-axis machining. When a part can be made using either directional 3-axis setups or 5-axis machining, the quote includes prices and lead times for both routes. Customers can choose according to batch size and accuracy requirements.

Multi-Face Single-Setup Machining Reduces Transfer Time

Parts within 600 x 1200 x 500 mm can have multiple faces completed in one setup, saving time otherwise spent waiting between operations and realigning the part. Five-axis samples usually take 3-7 days, with standard batch lead times of 10-15 days.

FAQ

Does every multi-face brass part need 5-axis machining?

Not necessarily. When features are all orthogonal, separate directional 3-axis setups often cost less. Five-axis machining offers clearer advantages for angled holes, compound surfaces or parts that require multiple faces to share one datum.

How can a contoured brass surface be inspected against the CAD model?

Curved surfaces can be measured point by point against the model on a Hexagon CMM or compared as a whole using 3D scanning, with profile controlled to 0.02 mm. Identify the surface datums and areas requiring reports on the drawing.

How do I specify brass grade and finish for an angled connector body?

Specify the grade and applicable standard, together with the coating type, thickness and areas requiring masking. Coating thickness is generally 3-20 um. Post-plating mating dimensions depend on the drawing, coating and order requirements.

Can you quote both 3-axis and 5-axis routes for the same brass part?

Yes. For parts suitable for both processes, the quote lists unit prices and lead times for the 3-axis and 5-axis routes separately so customers can compare them for their batch size.

What quality documents ship with 5-axis brass parts?

A dimensional inspection report is provided as standard. CMM reports, FAI reports in the customer’s format, material certificates and SGS environmental compliance reports can also be supplied when required.

How are contoured brass parts packed for international shipping?

Curved and polished surfaces are separated and protected individually, then packed with foam plus cartons. Heavy parts or batch orders can use wooden cases. Shipping options include DHL, FedEx, UPS and sea freight.

Can I order a single 5-axis brass prototype before a batch?

Yes. The MOQ is 1 piece, with samples usually delivered in 3-7 days. Batch production follows sample approval, with standard lead times of 10-15 days depending on complexity and quantity.

What are the payment, shipping and packaging options?

Payment options: T/T, PayPal, Western Union. Shipping options: DHL / FedEx / UPS / Sea freight. Packaging: Foam + carton; wooden case on request.
