Overview

The key to carbon steel shafts, guide sleeves and flanges is the rotational fit between outside diameters, bores and end faces. XCM CNC provides carbon steel CNC turning, with machining of bearing seats, sealing diameters and threads planned according to grade and heat treatment condition. 45#, 20# and Q235 are selected for their intended uses; different grades or standards must not be treated as equivalent. The MOQ is 1 piece. Samples usually take 3-7 days and general orders usually take 10-15 days, depending on complexity and quantity.

Carbon Steel Turning for Shaft Journals and Concentric Fits

Turning produces bearing journals, sealing diameters and stepped shaft surfaces so related rotational features mate around a common axis. With suitable datums, fixturing and inspection methods, coaxiality can reach 0.012 mm and roundness 0.006 mm.

Carbon Steel Turning and Support for Long Shafts

Cutting forces, heat and vibration can affect full-length straightness during long-shaft machining. Supports such as steady rests or follower rests are evaluated according to length and geometry, with machining arranged in stages. Shafts with a length-to-diameter ratio of 15:1 require evaluation against fixturing conditions.

Turned Carbon Steel Surfaces, Grooves, and Threads

Turned outside diameters can achieve Ra 0.8 um and bored surfaces Ra 1.6 um, controlled separately according to feature and process. Functional grooves and threads follow specified dimensions and standards, with appropriate thread gauges selected according to order requirements.

Heat-Treated Carbon Steel Rotating Parts and Final Fits

Heat treatment changes carbon steel hardness and can affect final mating surfaces, so material condition and machining sequence must be established together. Finishing or grinding can be planned for bearing journals or sealing diameters. IT5 or IT6 accuracy must suit the drawing and process route.

Applications

Stepped Transmission Shafts for General Machinery

Typical parts: Stepped transmission shaft, coupling shaft

Stepped shafts connect gears, couplings or bearings, with multiple journals and end faces providing different support and locating functions. Carbon steel suits load-bearing, cost-sensitive drive parts. Turning produces journals, shoulders and end faces around a common rotational axis, with mating dimensions and coaxiality defined by the drawing.

Pins and Guide Bushings for Construction Machinery

Typical parts: Pivot pin, guide bushing

Pins transmit loads at pivot joints, while guide bushings provide cylindrical support for reciprocating components. Load and wear requirements are evaluated against the specified carbon steel grade and heat treatment condition before outside diameters, end faces or bore fits are turned. Drawings and order requirements define hardness and final surface condition.

Linear Shafts and Guide Sleeves for Industrial Automation

Typical parts: Linear guide shaft, guide sleeve

Guide shafts and sleeves keep sliding components moving along a defined axis. The relationship between journal diameter, roundness and mating length is critical. Carbon steel can be used for rigid guide assemblies where weight reduction is not the main priority. Turning forms continuous cylindrical working surfaces and end locating shoulders.

Hydraulic Valve Stems and Sealing Sleeves

Typical parts: Hydraulic valve stem, sealing sleeve

Valve stems and sleeves provide motion guidance or mating interfaces inside valve bodies, requiring control of coaxiality between stepped outside diameters, bores and end faces. Turning suits these rotational mating features. Carbon steel grade and heat treatment should be selected according to loads, media and drawing requirements.

Pump Coupling Flanges and Locking Rings

Typical parts: Pump coupling flange, locking ring

Flanges and locking rings connect or axially retain pump components, with end faces, bores and outside diameters mating around a common rotational datum. Carbon steel suits mechanical connections with defined load requirements and cost considerations. Turning produces annular mating surfaces and locating shoulders. Rust protection and mating-surface protection depend on order requirements.

Why Choose Us

Quality Systems and Turning Equipment for Shaft Projects

ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C quality systems, together with equipment from DMG, Mazak, Matsuura, Brother, Taichung and Qiaofeng, support production of shafts, sleeves, flanges and connectors.

Coordinated Journal, Bore and Thread Operations

For transmission shafts, guide sleeves and flanges, turning, boring, threading and required finish grinding can be coordinated against drawings so bearing seats, sealing diameters and end-face fits suit the part function. Maximum turning diameter is 1250 mm at a workpiece length of 2000 mm.

Equipment Selected to Balance Machining Quality and Cost

Machines are selected from four equipment tiers from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe and the United States according to shaft diameter, coaxial relationships and the accuracy required by each operation. Equipment selection follows part tolerances without assigning fixed operations by brand.

Slender Shafts and Heat Treatment Included in Process Planning

For shafts with high length-to-diameter ratios, steady-rest or follower-rest support and staged machining can be evaluated. Heat treatment condition is included in the mating-surface machining sequence to help control shaft straightness and final fit dimensions.

Verifiable Shaft Dimensions, Surfaces and Threads

CMM reports, FAI reports and material certificates can be provided according to the order, with reported shaft diameters, roundness, roughness or thread items defined in advance. Production follows sample approval, allowing rotational and assembly fits to be verified first.

FAQ

Which carbon steel grade is suitable for a shaft or bushing?

Select the grade according to loads, wear requirements and heat treatment condition. 45#, 20# and Q235 are different materials with non-interchangeable properties. Specify the material standard and condition on the drawing or material certificate. 40Cr is an alloy steel and must not be treated as a carbon steel grade.

What turning size can you handle for a large steel part?

Maximum turning diameter is 1250 mm at a workpiece length of 2000 mm. A conservative limit of 1200 mm reserves clearance. Machinable diameters for shorter workpieces require evaluation against clamping and the actual setup.

How do you support a long carbon steel shaft during turning?

Steady-rest or follower-rest support can be evaluated for long shafts, with staged operations according to straightness and machining allowance. L/D 15:1 can be evaluated with suitable support and fixturing. Final feasibility depends on length, diameter and drawing requirements.

Can you achieve h6 or h7 fits after heat treatment?

h6/h7 fits and post-heat-treatment finishing routes can be evaluated against the drawing, with grinding where necessary. Achievable grades depend on material condition, dimensions and datum requirements. Specify mating-surface roughness and inspection datums as well.

What surface finish is available on turned diameters and bored holes?

Turned outside diameters can achieve Ra 0.8 um and bored holes Ra 1.6 um. Where bores require finer finishes, honing can be evaluated; Ra 0.8 um depends on suitable bore diameter and length. Specify roughness separately for different machined surfaces.

Can you inspect pipe threads on a turned part?

NPT, BSP, G or PT pipe threads can be machined and inspected according to the specified standard. Internal and external threads can also be inspected according to order requirements. Identify the thread standard, dimensions and inspection requirements on the drawing.

Should a plated shaft journal be masked or machined to allowance?

Masking or machining allowance depends on final fit dimensions, coating thickness and functional-surface requirements. Plating thickness ranges from 3-20 um. The coating and mating-surface treatment depend on the drawing.

What information should I provide to quote a turned carbon steel part?

Provide 2D/3D drawings, the material grade and standard, quantity, tolerances, intended use and critical requirements. Include long-shaft support, heat treatment condition, mating surfaces, threads and surface-treatment requirements where applicable. Supported formats include STEP, IGES, STP, DWG and dimensioned PDF.
