Overview

XCM CNC provides magnesium alloy 5-axis CNC machining for lightweight housings, frames and brackets with spatial curved surfaces, inclined mounting faces and angled holes. Magnesium alloys offer low density and some damping and are commonly used to reduce weight in portable equipment and moving components. Orders start at 1 piece. CAD models and drawing datums help establish tool access, the choice between 3+2 positioning and simultaneous 5-axis machining, and profile inspection scope.

Magnesium Curved Surfaces and Tool Access

Five-axis machining adjusts tool orientation to approach curved surfaces, angled holes and multi-directional mounting faces on magnesium parts. 3+2 positioning is used where indexed orientations can access each machined face. Simultaneous 5-axis machining is used where surfaces require continuously changing tool-axis orientation. The 5-axis machining size can reach 800 x 600 x 900 mm, with fixture obstruction and part orientation affecting tool access.

Thin-Wall Magnesium Brackets and Housings

Lightweight magnesium alloy brackets and housings often contain thin walls. Minimum metal wall thickness can reach 0.5 mm with blank pretreatment, stress-relief aging and optimized machining parameters. Feasibility in magnesium also depends on alloy, span and setup. Fine magnesium chips and dust are flammable, so safety requirements during thin-wall finishing must be established against machining conditions.

Magnesium Multi-Face Datum Control

Five-axis machining allows interfaces at different angles to be machined sequentially in planned orientations and related to common datums, reducing accumulated errors from datum changes. Maximum part size for multi-face single-setup machining is 600 x 1200 x 500 mm. Fixture obstruction, part orientation and tool length determine which faces can share the setup.

Magnesium Profile Inspection

Profile capability on freeform and 5-axis surfaces can reach 0.02 mm, evaluated against the 3D model and inspection plan. CMM measurement, 3D scanning or profile inspection can compare the part with the CAD model. Specify inspection datums and scope on the drawing.

Applications

Complex Camera Body Frames

A complex camera body frame and multi-angle window frame often combine lens mounting faces, windows and inclined mounting pads in one housing. Five-axis machining approaches these faces from different tool orientations, relating them to common model datums before CAD profile checks. Drawings define appearance and surface protection requirements.

Spatial Brackets for Optical Stabilizers

A stabilizer curved bracket and multi-angle mounting arm have slender weight-reduction arms and mounting faces pointing in different directions. Tool access and part orientation directly determine machining feasibility. Lower mass reduces the burden at the moving end. Arm rigidity and optical alignment require evaluation against the complete equipment structure.

Complex Robot End-Effector Brackets

A spatial end-effector bracket and angled-hole connector place connection faces and angled holes in different directions. Angled-hole positions require inspection relative to model datums. Dynamic loads, fatigue life and connection strength are evaluated against drawing requirements.

Complex Lightweight Automotive Bracket Prototypes

A complex mounting bracket and angled mounting lug prototype often validate lightweight structures and assembly relationships with surrounding components before production. Inclined hole/face features and spatial profiles must align. Five-axis routes use the model to establish access and setup. Connection strength, operating temperature and protection requirements follow drawings and operating conditions.

Why Choose Us

Quality Systems and Five-Axis Equipment

We operate under ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C quality systems, with DMG 80mono 5-axis equipment and machines from Mazak, Matsuura and Brother. Machining and inspection of curved surfaces, angled holes and multi-directional mounting faces are supported by these systems and machines.

Five-Axis Support from Small Parts to Large Structures

From small connectors to large structural parts, our equipment covers magnesium alloy parts of different sizes. Curves, angled holes and multi-directional mounting faces can use 3+2 or simultaneous 5-axis routes according to geometry, with CMM or profile inspection arranged as needed.

Equipment Tiers Matched to Profile Accuracy

Machines are selected from four equipment tiers from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe and the United States according to part and operation accuracy requirements, balancing quality and cost. Surface profiles, tool approach directions and clamping conditions place different demands on equipment.

Material Certificates, CMM and First-Article Reports

Material certificates, CMM reports and FAI reports can be supplied according to the order, with first-article formats following customer requirements. Third-party inspection reports are evaluated according to order requirements when needed.

Batch Production after Prototype Validation

Orders start at 1 piece. Prototypes usually take 3-7 days and typical lead time is 10-15 days, depending on part complexity and order quantity. Batch production can follow sample approval. An NDA can be signed as needed for drawing confidentiality.

FAQ

When is 3+2 positioning suitable for a magnesium five-axis part?

3+2 positioning usually meets feature requirements where each machined face is accessible through indexed orientations. Simultaneous 5-axis machining is used for continuous surfaces or toolpaths requiring continuously changing orientation. The choice depends on model, datums and access rather than axis count alone.

Can five-axis machining handle undercuts on a magnesium part?

Undercuts can be machined. Whether they can be completed in one operation depends on tool length, fixtures, part orientation and surrounding interference. Multiple setups or special tools may be required. Provide the CAD model and drawings so machinable areas can be evaluated.

What geometry affects the cost of a complex curved magnesium part?

Surface span, thin-wall thickness, inclined-interface angles and access, tool-axis directions, fixture space and clamping datums affect toolpaths and profile inspection scope. Quotation considers material condition, the CAD model and drawing requirements.

Which magnesium grade and stock condition should I provide?

Specify the grade, procurement standard, blank form and supply or heat treatment condition. AZ31B and AZ91D are common inquiry grades. Material certificates can be supplied according to the order to verify actual grade against drawing requirements.

How should coating and masking be specified on angled surfaces?

Identify surfaces to be treated, masked areas, color and acceptance requirements on the drawing. Coatings change mating-surface and thread dimensions. State whether dimensional acceptance applies before or after treatment. The route is established during quotation according to grade and operating environment.

How is magnesium chip and dust safety assessed during five-axis machining?

Fine magnesium chips and dust are flammable. Tool orientation changes continuously during 5-axis machining, changing chip and dust discharge directions. Spatial surfaces and deeper areas require advance consideration. Safety requirements are established for grade, geometry and machining conditions within the project. Identify wall thickness and machining allowance during inquiry.

Is a 3D model enough to quote a five-axis magnesium part?

A 3D model defines geometry, tool access and the profile-comparison scope, but dimensioned 2D drawings must define fit tolerances, datums and profile acceptance methods. Also provide material condition, quantity and surface-treatment requirements for quotation. STEP, IGES, STP, DWG or dimensioned PDF files are accepted. Inspection reports and scope follow order agreements.
