Overview

We provide combined turning and milling for magnesium alloy connectors with radial holes, flats or mounting lugs. This suits gimbal interfaces, robot end-effector flanges and circular interface housings for portable equipment that need cylindrical mating surfaces related to side features. The Mazak I-100S turn-mill center performs turning, milling and drilling and has a second spindle. Orders start at 1 piece, supporting prototyping before batch production. Magnesium alloys offer low density and high specific strength, making them valuable in weight-sensitive assemblies. Hole locations, angular positions and mating-surface requirements can be assessed for process planning once drawing datums are defined.

Linked Turned and Milled Magnesium Features

Combined turning and milling relates cylindrical magnesium interfaces to side features such as flats, lugs and cross-holes. The Mazak I-100S has a second spindle and performs turning, milling and drilling. Whether rotational surfaces and side features can be completed in one setup depends on geometry and datum relationships.

Magnesium Radial Holes and Flats

Radial-hole and flat angles and positions are usually defined relative to the rotational axis. Hole-group position can reach 0.015 mm, and coaxiality of shaft/bore features or stepped outside diameters can reach 0.012 mm. Define inspection datums and setups on the drawing so these relationships can be verified beyond hole diameter alone.

Thin Walls and Chip Safety in Magnesium Turn-Mill Parts

Magnesium housings with side windows often have thin walls. Minimum metal wall thickness can reach 0.5 mm with blank pretreatment, stress-relief aging and optimized machining parameters. Feasibility for a specific magnesium grade also depends on wall thickness, span and clamping method. Magnesium chips and dust present a combustion risk, requiring particular attention during interrupted cuts for flats and side holes. Safety requirements depend on grade, chip form and machining conditions.

Magnesium Turn-Mill Surface Finish, Threads and Inspection

Turned outside diameters can achieve Ra 0.8 um, while bored holes and finish-milled faces achieve Ra 1.6 um, corresponding to mating diameters, bores and mounting faces respectively. Threads are checked with go/no-go or ring gauges, and cross-hole edges can be deburred. Rotational datums, hole locations and coaxiality can be verified using CMMs, roundness testers or height gauges.

Applications

Optical Gimbal Connectors

A gimbal connector and journal and locating flange have defined angular and positional relationships between rotational mating surfaces, locating flats and radial fastening holes. Combined turning and milling relates these features during machining. Lightweight magnesium reduces the burden on moving interfaces, while its damping properties help suppress vibration. Operating temperature and structural rigidity depend on part requirements.

Robot End-Effector Flanges

An end-effector flange and flatted connector center through a rotational mating register, while flats and side mounting holes define tool orientation. These features therefore need a common rotational datum. Magnesium reduces end-effector mass. Dynamic loading and contact with steel or aluminum parts require fatigue and dissimilar-metal contact protection to be considered during design.

Circular Interface Housings for Portable Electronics

A circular interface housing and side-window connector housing need cylindrical mating surfaces related to side windows, wiring holes and flats. Magnesium alloys are light and commonly used for electromagnetic shielding in handheld housings. Shielding effectiveness depends on seams, grounding paths and surface protection and must be established through equipment design.

Automotive Sensor Mounting Housing Prototypes

A sensor mounting housing and side-port housing often combine rotational geometry, side connection faces and fastening holes in one part. Combined turning and milling can validate assembly relationships during prototyping, with orders starting at 1 piece. Media resistance, temperature and corrosion-protection requirements depend on drawings and the operating environment.

Why Choose Us

Quality Systems and Turning and Milling Equipment

Our factory is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C quality systems and uses equipment from DMG, Mazak, Matsuura and Brother. The Mazak I-100S turn-mill center handles parts combining rotational and side features.

Coordinated Turned Interfaces and Side Features

Our machining coverage extends from small connectors to large structural parts. For these turned-milled parts, turned interfaces, radial holes, flats, tapping and cross-hole deburring can be coordinated around the same drawing, with masking scope and final dimensional requirements established together.

Equipment Matched to Accuracy, Quality and Cost

Our equipment spans four tiers from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe and the United States, with machines matched to part and operation accuracy requirements. Rotational datums, side-hole angular positions and mounting faces have different requirements and receive appropriate equipment to balance machining quality and cost.

Verifying Rotational Datums and Side Features

Critical-dimension inspection and first-article reports can be supplied according to the order, checking related dimensions around drawing-defined rotational axes, hole locations, angular positions and mounting faces. Inspection datums and report formats follow drawings and order agreements.

Prototype Validation Followed by Batch Production

Prototypes usually take 3-7 days and standard lead time is 10-15 days, depending on part complexity and order quantity. Batch production follows sample approval. An NDA can be signed as needed for project information.

FAQ

Can every turned and milled feature be completed in one setup?

Not necessarily. Rotational surfaces, side holes and flats can be machined consecutively on the same turn-mill machine, but the number of setups depends on geometry, overhang and tool access. Back-face features or deeper internal structures may require a second setup.

How should a radial hole relate to a magnesium part’s turned axis?

Use the rotational axis as the datum. Specify angular position and position tolerance relative to that axis and the relevant end face or mounting face. Hole-group position can reach 0.015 mm. This verifies the relationship between hole and axis rather than hole diameter alone.

How do milled flats and cross-holes affect turn-mill pricing?

The main factors are side-hole count and directions, flat areas, cross-hole edge requirements, wall thickness, datum transfer and setup access. These determine operation count and inspection scope. Clear cross-hole deburring and edge requirements improve quotation accuracy.

Which magnesium grade and blank condition should I specify?

Specify the grade, procurement standard, blank form and supply condition. AZ31B and AZ91D are common starting points for discussion. Actual material follows the material certificate and part requirements. Material certificates can be supplied according to the order.

Can a turn-milled magnesium part receive corrosion protection?

Magnesium parts generally require corrosion protection, with the route depending on grade, operating environment and the fit requirements of each surface. Any coating changes mating dimensions. Identify masked surfaces and the final dimensional condition on the drawing. The process route depends on order requirements.

How is magnesium chip and dust safety assessed for turn-milling?

This requires careful consideration. Fine magnesium chips and dust are flammable, and interrupted turn-mill cuts are more likely to generate fine chips. Grade, thin-wall geometry and machining conditions affect safety requirements, which are established for the project.

What is needed to quote a magnesium turn-mill connector?

2D/3D drawings, material grade and condition, and quantity are the starting information. Side-hole positions, angular datums, fit tolerances and surface requirements directly affect the quote. STEP, IGES, STP, DWG or dimensioned PDF files are accepted. Project information can be covered by an NDA. Batch production follows sample approval.
