Alloy Steel Turned Shaft Datums for Milled Flats

Alloy steel turned-milled parts use the turned outside diameter as a datum. Outside surfaces can achieve Ra 0.8 um, with shaft diameter tolerances of h6/h7 or +/-0.005 mm. Flats and mounting faces are milled relative to this datum, with flat symmetry controlled to 0.02 mm. Coaxiality between stepped outside diameters is 0.012 mm.

Alloy Steel Radial Hole Drilling and Side Thread Tapping

Radial holes can be drilled down to a diameter of 0.2 mm, with hole-pattern position of 0.01 mm and deep-hole ratios up to L/D = 10. Side internal threads start at M1.4, with an effective blind-hole thread depth of 50 mm. Functional threads are checked with go/no-go or ring gauges. Intersections between radial and axial holes are prone to raised burrs, so cross-hole deburring is scheduled as a separate operation.

Alloy Steel Keyway Milling and Angular Position Control

Alloy steel shaft keyways have a minimum width of 1.0 mm and symmetry of 0.02 mm. Retaining-ring and seal grooves have a minimum width of 0.5 mm, while O-ring grooves have a minimum width of 1.0 mm and a depth tolerance of 0.01 mm. The angular position of a keyway relative to a flat or end-face hole follows the datum direction specified on the drawing.

Alloy Steel Long Shaft Turning Runout and Straightness

Alloy steel shafts can be turned to a maximum length of 2000 mm, with slender-shaft ratios up to L/D = 15:1. Shafts with higher length-to-diameter ratios use a steady rest or follower rest to reduce chatter and tool deflection. Shaft circular runout and face runout can both be controlled to 0.012 mm, with straightness of 0.01 mm / 1030 mm.

Applications

Transmission Shaft Ends with Keyways or Side Holes

Typical parts: Transmission shaft-end connector, keyed shaft end

The turned outside diameter locates the shaft end in its mating part. A keyway and mating key transmit torque and fix angular position, while side holes provide lateral connection or location. Relevant capabilities: h6/h7 shaft diameters, minimum keyway width of 1.0 mm and symmetry of 0.02 mm.

Reducer Input Flanges and Joint Shaft Ends

Typical parts: Reducer input flange, joint shaft end with flats

Input flanges locate through end-face hole patterns and outside diameters. Joint shaft ends with flats require a defined angular relationship between the cylindrical mating surface and the flats. Relevant capabilities: face runout of 0.012 mm and hole-pattern position of 0.015 mm.

Hydraulic Rod-End Connectors with Locking Flats and Side Holes

Typical parts: Hydraulic rod-end connector, locking-flat connector

The outside diameter connects to the rod end, while locking flats and side holes provide fixing or transverse connection. Relevant capabilities: NPT / BSP / G / PT pipe threads, with cross-hole deburring scheduled as a separate operation.

Pump Shaft Hubs and Coupling Flanges

Typical parts: Pump shaft hub, coupling flange

A hub receives torque through a keyway and mating key. Coupling flanges fasten through end-face hole patterns and use cylindrical mating surfaces to establish the shaft axis. Relevant capabilities: maximum turning diameter of 1250 mm and coaxiality of 0.012 mm.

Why Choose Us

Quality Systems and Equipment for Combined Turning and Milling

We operate under ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C quality systems and use machining centers from DMG, Mazak, Matsuura and Brother. CMMs and functional thread gauges help verify the combined features specified on the drawing.

Coordinating Turning and Side Machining around Common Datums

Turning and milling of outside diameters, radial holes, flats and keyways are planned according to feature accessibility. Suitable geometries can reduce setup changes, and any necessary grinding or EDM operations are evaluated against the drawing. Process planning does not assume that every feature can be completed in one setup.

Tiered Equipment Strategy for Low-Cost CNC Machining, Quality-Assured Production

XCM CNC uses four tiers of CNC equipment from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe and the United States. Rough turning and drilling with less demanding tolerances run on mainland Chinese or Taiwanese machines. Finish turning of bearing seats and high-precision mating surfaces is assigned to imported machines such as DMG and Mazak. Matching equipment to the accuracy the part requires avoids using machines with higher hourly costs for simple operations and controls machining costs while meeting drawing requirements.

Drawing Feedback before Quotation

After receiving drawings, engineers check whether keyway phase, radial-hole datums and thread standards are fully specified. Missing angular datums or conflicting tolerances are raised before quotation to avoid drawing changes and delays after production starts.

Approved Programs and Inspection Plans for Repeat Orders

After the first batch is approved, machining programs, fixtures and inspection items are archived by part number. Repeat orders reuse these records to improve dimensional consistency between batches and avoid repeating machine setup development.

FAQ

Can all features of a turned-milled part be completed in one setup?

Not every geometry can be completed in one setup. Tool access and the ability to reproduce datums determine what is feasible. Outside diameters and end-face holes can usually be machined consecutively, while some radial holes or chamfers may require a second location. The setup plan is established during drawing review.

How should keyway and flat orientation be specified?

Show the angular position of the keyway or flat relative to the datum direction identified on the drawing, and specify critical slot widths. Where needed, verify this angular relationship during first-article approval. The minimum keyway width of 1.0 mm must be assessed against the applicable standard and inspection method.

How are burrs controlled at a cross-hole intersection?

Burrs at cross-hole intersections are removed in a dedicated operation, and external sharp edges are broken by 0.1 mm. Specify internal cleanliness requirements and burr acceptance limits in the order. List any pressure or leak testing requirements separately.

Can plating be combined with precision mating surfaces?

Nickel, zinc and chrome plating thicknesses range from 3-20 um and affect final mating dimensions. Specify the coating type, target thickness and finished dimensions. Machining allowances depend on the drawing, coating and order requirements.

Can you machine a part from a physical sample without drawings?

Yes. Parts can be customized from drawings or physical samples. For sample-based machining, critical dimensions are measured first, then the material grade, tolerances and thread standards are agreed with the customer before machining begins.

What inspection documents ship with turned-milled parts?

Every batch includes a dimensional inspection report. FAI reports are available for new projects, and precision parts can include CMM reports. Material certificates can also be supplied according to order requirements.

How long do prototype and batch orders take?

Prototypes take 3-7 days and standard batch orders take 10-15 days. For parts requiring heat treatment or plating, actual lead time is evaluated separately based on the number of operations and order quantity.

What are the payment, shipping and packaging options?

Payment options are T/T, PayPal, Western Union. Shipping options are DHL / FedEx / UPS / Sea freight. Packaging options are Foam + carton / wooden crate.
