Custom Precision Tool Steel CNC Turned Parts
Overview
XCM CNC provides CNC turning for tool steel core pins, ejector pins, round punches, guide posts and bushings. This suits rotational parts with stepped outside diameters, bores and end faces used in injection molds, stamping dies, checking fixtures and automation equipment. Turning establishes a common rotational datum for guiding, ejection and locating fits. Outside diameters requiring tighter fits after hardening can receive drawing-based secondary operations such as grinding, EDM or wire EDM. The MOQ is 1 piece, prototype lead time is 3-7 days and typical lead time is 10-15 days, depending on complexity, quantity and heat treatment scheduling.

Stepped Diameters and Common Axis on Tool Steel Pins
Tool steel core pins, ejector pins and guide posts often feature stepped outside diameters and shoulders. Turning these mating sections from a common rotational datum helps control coaxiality between them. Coaxiality capability between stepped outside diameters and shaft/bore features is 0.012 mm, depending on drawing datums, fixturing and inspection methods.
Supporting Long Tool Steel Core Pins
Slender core-pin length-to-diameter capability is L/D 15:1. Higher ratios make the workpiece more prone to deflection and vibration, so length and diameter determine the use of steady rests, follower rests or staged operations rather than unsupported slender-shaft turning. Straightness capability is 0.01 mm / 1030 mm length, with material and heat treatment condition also requiring evaluation.
Finishing Hardened Tool Steel Guide Diameters
Heat treatment changes dimensions, so drawings for guide diameters and mating surfaces must state whether acceptance applies before or after heat treatment. Where IT5 or IT6 fits are required, necessary secondary operations such as grinding, EDM or wire EDM can supplement CNC turning. Grade and drawing requirements define hardness and final condition; there is no universal value for tool steel.
Turned Diameter vs Bored Hole Finish in Tool Steel Bushings
A guide bushing outside diameter and bore are different machined surfaces. Turned outside diameters can achieve Ra 0.8 um and bored holes Ra 1.6 um, requiring separate callouts. Roundness capability is 0.006 mm, with the route depending on turning, grinding or boring. Outside-diameter roughness values cannot be applied directly to bores.

Applications
Core Pins and Ejector Pins for Injection Molds
A core pin forms a hole or slender core, while an ejector pin reciprocates in its guide hole to push out molded parts. Both feature stepped outside diameters, end faces and mating sections. Straightness and length-to-diameter ratio determine support during slender core-pin machining. Ejector sliding diameters and end faces require dimensions and roughness to be defined together. Tool steel wear resistance and hardenability are key reasons for its use in these repeatedly sliding parts.
Round Punches, Guide Posts and Bushings for Stamping Dies
A round punch performs punching, and coaxiality between its cutting and mounting sections affects die clearance. A guide post and guide bush guide mold-base movement, requiring coordinated control of bushing bore-to-outside-diameter coaxiality. Punches and guide parts require different balances of hardness and toughness. Drawings specify the grade and heat treatment condition.
Rotational Measuring Components for Gauges and Checking Fixtures
A plug gauge blank and inspection locating pin are cylindrical fixture components used to check bore diameters or locate workpieces repeatedly. Roundness and diameter tolerance are key requirements. Roundness can be checked on a roundness tester. Specify final ground dimensions and inspection datums on the drawing.
Guide Sleeves and Locating Pins for Automation Equipment
A wear guide sleeve guides reciprocating components, while a round locating pin defines part position in a fixture or mechanism. Coaxiality between mating outside diameters, sleeve bores and shoulders is the focus. Explain lubrication or rust-protection requirements with the assembly drawing.
Why Choose Us
Quality Systems and Turning Equipment
Factory production is managed through ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C systems, with machining centers from DMG, Mazak, Matsuura and Brother. Turning equipment includes Jingshang automatic lathes and a Mazak i-100S turn-mill center with a second spindle, supporting milling and drilling operations required by these turned parts.
Turning Coverage from Small Parts to Long Shafts
Factory machining coverage extends from small connectors to large structural parts. Relevant turned parts range from core pins, ejector pins and guide bushings to shafts and sleeves 2000 mm long, with diameters up to 1250 mm at that length. Grinding, EDM or wire EDM can be coordinated with turning according to the drawing.
Equipment Matched to Accuracy Requirements
Critical shaft diameters, mating surfaces and general external geometry have different accuracy requirements. Machines are selected from four equipment tiers from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe and the United States according to each operation, balancing machining quality and cost.
Single Replacement Parts and Sample Approval
The MOQ is 1 piece, suitable for replacement core pins, ejector pins, round punches or guide bushings. Prototypes take 3-7 days, with production following your sample approval.
Critical-Dimension Inspection and Reports
Stepped shaft diameters, roundness, coaxiality and runout can be inspected relative to drawing datums. Roundness uses a roundness tester, while coordinate dimensions use CMM measurement. CMM and FAI reports can be supplied according to the order in the customer’s report format.
FAQ
Which steel grade should I specify for a guide bushing or punch?
Wear-focused punches and guide parts often use SKD11 or DC53. S136 can be considered for mold parts with demanding corrosion-resistance and polishing requirements. The final grade and hardness depend on mating components, loads and heat treatment requirements. Specify the material standard and target condition during inquiry. We do not assume a universal hardness.
Can threads be cut on a tool steel pin?
Yes. External threads start at M2.0 and internal threads at M1.4, with sizes up to M220. Functional threads are checked using go/no-go or ring gauges. Whether threading remains feasible after hardening depends on grade and hardness. State the material condition for thread machining and acceptance on the drawing.
Which tolerance applies to a tool steel pin diameter?
Dimensional tolerances on precision features can reach +/-0.003 mm for critical dimensions on small precision parts under 100 mm. Shaft/bore fits can follow +/-0.01 mm or h6/H7 requirements. IT5/IT6 generally requires CNC turning plus necessary secondary operations such as grinding, EDM or wire EDM. It does not mean all dimensions and materials are completed by turning alone.
How are roundness and coaxiality checked on stepped pins?
Roundness can be measured on a roundness tester, while coaxiality between stepped outside diameters is checked by CMM relative to drawing datums. Roundness of 0.006 mm and coaxiality of 0.012 mm are capabilities, with actual results depending on dimensions, fixturing and measurement methods. CMM or FAI reports can be supplied according to the order.
Can a guide bushing bore reach a finer finish than Ra 1.6 um?
Boring can achieve Ra 1.6 um. Honing can be evaluated for sliding bores requiring lower roughness, with a capability of Ra 0.8 um depending on bore diameter and length. Specify outside and inside roughness separately. Include dimensional tolerances and runout requirements for guide or sliding surfaces.
What is the lead time for a replacement pin or bushing?
Prototypes usually take 3-7 days, and typical lead time is 10-15 days, depending on quantity, structural complexity, heat treatment and grinding schedules. The MOQ is 1 piece. Production follows sample approval.
What do you need to quote a stepped core pin?
Provide 2D/3D drawings or a sample, identifying material grade and condition, critical mating dimensions and tolerances, quantity and intended use. STEP, IGES, STP, DWG or dimensioned PDF files are accepted. An NDA can be signed as required for confidential projects.
