Overview

XCM CNC provides combined turning and milling for tool steel rotational parts with locating flats, side holes or cross-holes, relating the outside-diameter axis and side features through drawing datums. Parts such as round punches, tool seats with set-screw holes and anti-rotation cores can have outside-diameter fits, milled-face orientation and hole-entry deburring planned separately. Wear resistance depends on the exact grade and heat treatment condition. Precision features in the hardened state can be evaluated for grinding or wire EDM. Provide drawings, the grade and condition, critical tolerances and quantity for process evaluation.

Tool Steel Turned Axis and Side-Hole Position

The turned outside diameter establishes a rotational reference for a side hole or locating flat on a tool steel pin or sleeve. Concentricity up to 0.012 mm and hole-pattern position up to 0.015 mm apply to their respective features and require drawing datums, setup and inspection to be defined separately.

Tool Steel Asymmetric Features and Datum Planning

Milling a flat or off-axis hole removes material asymmetrically from a turned blank, so its orientation and relationship to the rotational datum need explicit control. The turning and milling sequence is selected from the geometry to reduce unnecessary datum changes; this does not imply every part is completed in one setup.

Tool Steel Hard-State Slots and Mating Diameters

Specified slots and mating diameters can use coordinated turning, milling and, where required, grinding or wire EDM for final features. The material grade and heat-treatment state affect the finishing plan, while the drawing defines final hardness and fit rather than relying on a universal hard-machining promise.

Tool Steel Cross-Holes and Burr Inspection

Cross holes that meet an internal bore need a defined burr-removal and cleanliness requirement to support assembly. Turned outside diameters can reach Ra 0.8 um and finish-milled faces Ra 1.6 um, with each surface assigned its own requirement and inspected against the relevant datum.

Applications

Round Punches for Stamping and Cold Forming

Typical parts: Round punch with locating flat, side-hole punch

The punch mounts in the die through a round shank, while a locating flat or side hole prevents rotation and secures it. Combined turning and milling produces the rotational shank and related side features. Impact loading at the working end, sharp corners and heat treatment condition require evaluation against drawings and material requirements.

Custom Cutting Tool Holders and Tool Seats

Typical parts: Custom tool holder, tool seat with set-screw hole

Tool holders clamp cutting tools, while tool seats secure them through set-screw holes or side locating faces. These parts combine coaxial outside diameters, end faces, flats and radial holes. Combined turning and milling suits these related rotational and side features. Design requirements must define clamping loads and the exact grade; this machining capability does not imply a promised dynamic balance grade.

Injection Mold Core Inserts with Anti-Rotation Features

Typical parts: Round core insert, side-hole core insert

Core inserts form local part geometry. The outside diameter fits into the mold base, while flats or side holes establish orientation. Turning establishes outside diameters and end faces, and milling completes anti-rotation faces and side holes. Material and surface requirements for molding contact faces depend on the exact grade and drawing.

Side-Locating Pins and Wear Sleeves for Automation

Typical parts: Side-hole locating pin, flat-sided wear sleeve

Locating pins mate through their outside diameter and are secured through side holes. Wear sleeves guide moving parts through outside diameters and bores, with a flat preventing rotation. Combined turning and milling relates side holes or flats to rotational datums. Assembly requirements define hole-edge deburring and final locating datums.

Why Choose Us

Quality Systems and Turning and Milling Equipment

Production is managed through ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C systems. Equipment from Mazak, DMG, Matsuura and Brother supports turning and milling of tool steel parts with side holes, flats or slots.

Machining Side Features Relative to Turned Datums

Turning and milling of outside diameters, side holes, flats and cross-holes are planned against the drawing, with grinding or wire EDM added as needed for precision features. Defined datum relationships between rotational axes and side features help verify assembly location.

Four Equipment Tiers Matched to Operation Accuracy

Machines are selected from four equipment tiers from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe and the United States according to outside-diameter, hole-position and milled-face accuracy requirements, balancing quality and cost without assuming a common setup plan for all features.

Starting Small Batches of Combined Features with Samples

The MOQ starts at 1 piece. Punches, tool holders and insert samples with side holes or anti-rotation flats can be made first. Further batches follow assembly approval, allowing rotational and side-location relationships to be verified.

Side Holes, Axes and Deburring Requirements Included in Inspection

The relationship between outside diameters and side-hole positions can be inspected against the drawing, with internal cross-hole burr-control requirements defined. Critical dimensions and inspection results can be reported according to the order, reducing interference from residual burrs at hole openings during assembly.

FAQ

How are side holes positioned relative to a turned diameter?

Define side-hole positions relative to the rotational axis or specified datum on the drawing. Position is then evaluated against hole diameter, spacing and inspection method. The established position capability is 0.015 mm. Axes and hole positions are accepted against their respective datums.

Can you machine flats and slots on a tool steel pin?

Flats, slots and mounting faces can be machined relative to a turned outside diameter according to the drawing, with their relationship to the axis verified. Heat treatment condition affects subsequent finishing, so provide the exact grade and final condition.

Do all turned and milled features use one setup?

The number of setups depends on part geometry, tool access and the datum plan. These guide the turning and milling sequence while reducing unnecessary datum changes. Identify functional datums and relative-position requirements on the drawing.

How are burrs handled where cross holes meet?

Cross-holes can be machined and deburred. Internal burr and cleanliness requirements must be defined by drawings or the order. If passages have specific residue limits, list the acceptance method during inquiry.

Which steel grade suits a punch with a locating flat?

SKD11 or DC53 can be considered for cold-work, wear-resistant punches. The final grade depends on the stamped material, loads and heat treatment requirements. Provide the exact material standard and condition so suitability can be evaluated.

What is the minimum order and typical delivery time?

The MOQ is 1 piece. Prototypes usually take 3-7 days and typical lead time is 10-15 days. Actual scheduling depends on quantity, part complexity, heat treatment and finishing requirements. Production can follow sample approval.

What do you need to quote and approve a sample?

Provide 2D/3D drawings or a sample, the exact grade and material condition, critical tolerances, quantity and intended use. Include side-hole datums, burr limits and inspection requirements. Accepted formats include STEP, IGES, STP, DWG and dimensioned PDF.
