Aluminum CNC Turned Stepped Diameters and Bores: 0.012 mm Coaxiality, 0.006 mm Roundness

Bushings, interface rings and cylindrical housings can include multiple internal and external diameters, stepped bores and locating end faces. Mating diameters can achieve 0.012 mm coaxiality, 0.006 mm roundness and 0.01 mm radial runout, inspected against the specified rotational datum. Turned outside diameters achieve Ra 0.8 um and bored holes Ra 1.6 um. Bearing and sealing features can also be controlled to h6/H7 fit classes.

Aluminum Long-Shaft CNC Turning: L/D 15:1 with Straightness 0.01 mm

Slender aluminum shafts support a length-to-diameter ratio of L/D = 15:1 and a maximum turning length of 2000 mm. At high rotational speeds, gravity and cutting forces can deflect long shafts. A steady rest or follow rest supports the middle of the workpiece, while reduced feed and depth of cut limit radial forces. Long outside diameters can achieve straightness of 0.01 mm / 1030 mm and cylindricity of 0.011 mm / 1030 mm. Coaxiality between mating sections at both ends is inspected against drawing datums.

Aluminum CNC Turned Threads, Grooves and Knurling: M1.4-M220 Range

Internal and external threads, annular grooves and knurling on aluminum fittings, focusing rings and knobs are produced during turning. Minimum turned groove width is 0.5 mm, thread depth is 4 x D and effective blind-hole thread depth is 50 mm. Straight or diamond knurling with a module of 0.3-1.0 suits gripping surfaces on knobs and handles. Connection threads are machined to the specified standard and class, then checked with go/no-go gauges or thread ring gauges.

Aluminum CNC Turned Parts with Anodizing Compensation: h6/H7 Fits after 25-60 um Coating

Mating outside diameters on aluminum bushings and cylindrical parts are turned to h6 (+/-0.005 mm), and mating bores to H7 (+/-0.006 mm). Hard anodizing thickness of 25-60 um can affect fit dimensions more than the machining tolerance itself. Machining allowances are calculated from coating thickness and fit class. Standard anodizing at 8-15 um has a smaller dimensional effect on non-mating faces. Threads and precision mating surfaces can be masked, and final dimensions are accepted against the drawing after anodizing.

Why Choose Us

Turning Equipment and Quality Systems

XCM CNC operates Mazak I-100S, DMG 80mono, Matsuura MX-520 and Brother machining centers, along with Jingshang 80 automatic lathes. Its quality systems include ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C to support custom part machining and quality management.

Complete Supporting Operations from Small Connectors to Large Structural Parts

The machining range covers small connectors through large structural parts. Turned parts can include boring, threading, grooving, knurling, edge breaking and anodizing, allowing complete parts to be sourced to their structural and surface requirements.

Tiered Equipment Strategy for Low-Cost CNC Machining, Quality-Assured Production

XCM CNC groups its CNC equipment into four tiers: mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe and North America. Lower-tolerance operations such as rough turning and non-mating outside diameters use mainland Chinese or Taiwanese equipment. Finish turning of bearing seats and boring of mating holes requiring h6/H7 accuracy use imported machines such as DMG and Mazak. Equipment is matched to each part’s actual accuracy requirements to reduce machining costs while meeting drawing requirements.

Rotational Geometry Inspected against Drawing Datums

Mating outside diameters and bores are accepted to h6/H7 using ring and plug gauges. Threads are checked with go/no-go gauges or thread ring gauges. Coaxiality, roundness and runout are inspected with a Hexagon CMM against drawing datums, and report datums match the drawings. CMM reports and material certificates can be supplied. Repeat orders use the first batch’s inspection plan.

Anodized Fit Dimensions Delivered to the Drawing’s Fit Classes

Allowances for mating outside diameters and bores on bushings and cylindrical parts are included during turning based on coating thickness. Hard anodizing at 25-60 um significantly affects h6/H7 fits, so allowance is calculated from coating thickness and fit class. Threads and precision surfaces that do not require anodizing are designated as masked areas. Final anodized dimensions are checked with gauges against drawing fit classes, with surface treatment and assembly fits delivered as one finished part order.

FAQ

Should I specify coaxiality or runout for a rotating aluminum sleeve?

It depends on the sleeve’s assembly and rotation requirements. Coaxiality of 0.012 mm controls the relationship between internal and external axes, while radial runout of 0.01 mm controls surface variation relative to a rotational datum. Specify the requirements for mating features and end faces separately on the drawing so each can be inspected accordingly.

Can you turn thin-walled aluminum sleeves?

Yes. Thin-walled sleeves can be machined with a minimum metal wall thickness of 0.5 mm. Thin sections are evaluated based on material, wall length and workholding. Blank pretreatment, stress relief and cutting parameter adjustments help control deformation.

What if an internal bore needs a finer finish than Ra 1.6 um?

Honing can be evaluated, with honed bores achieving Ra 0.8 um. Ground surfaces can achieve Ra 0.4 um and polished surfaces Ra 0.2 um. The process must suit the actual bore diameter, depth and fit requirements. Critical roughness is inspected with a Leader NCA8106 roughness tester.

Which thread details are needed for a custom aluminum fitting?

Specify the thread standard, size, class and effective thread depth. Metric internal and external threads in the M1.4-M220 range and NPT, BSP, G and PT pipe threads can be machined and checked with go/no-go gauges or thread ring gauges. For blind holes, also specify effective thread length and drilled hole depth.

How is the fit dimension managed when a turned aluminum bushing is hard anodized?

Hard anodizing thickness of 25-60 um may affect h6/H7 fit dimensions more than the machining tolerance itself. Turning includes an allowance based on coating thickness and fit class. Threads and precision surfaces that do not require anodizing are masked. After anodizing, gauges check the final drawing dimensions. Specify whether dimensional requirements apply before or after anodizing.

Can you supply material certificates for the specified alloy?

Yes. Material certificates can be supplied. Specify both alloy grade and temper when ordering so delivered material can be matched to the drawing. Surface treatment reports, such as coating thickness or salt spray reports, can be supplied according to order requirements.

How do you control straightness and runout on a long aluminum shaft?

For aluminum shafts with length-to-diameter ratios above 10:1, a steady rest or follow rest supports the middle of the workpiece. Feed and depth of cut are reduced to limit radial forces. Long outside diameters can achieve straightness of 0.01 mm / 1030 mm and runout of 0.012 mm. A CMM checks coaxiality between mating sections at both ends against drawing datums.
