Aluminum CNC Turn-Mill Datum Transfer: 0.012 mm Coaxiality, 0.015 mm Radial Hole Position
Mating outside diameters, central bores and radial holes on aluminum connectors share a rotational datum across turning and milling operations. Radial hole position tolerance relative to the axis is 0.015 mm, rotational mating surface coaxiality is 0.012 mm and radial runout is 0.01 mm. When machining in separate operations, datum pickup for turning and milling must follow the same assembly requirements. Fewer setups can reduce datum transfer error, while projecting mounting lugs or large parts may require separate turning and milling operations.
Aluminum Wrench Flats and Mounting Lugs: CNC Milled on Turned Parts, Flatness 0.02 mm
After outside diameters are turned on aluminum fittings and circular flanges, wrench flats, mounting lugs and fastening holes are milled. Milled flatness is 0.02 mm and perpendicularity relative to the rotational axis is 0.02 mm / 1000 mm. Wrench flats support pipe connection tightening, mounting lugs connect brackets or housings, and locating faces define installation orientation.
Aluminum Cross-Hole and Internal Passage CNC Machining: L/D 10 Deep Holes, 3.0 mm Min Channel
Axial holes, lateral pipe connection holes and internal passages can be machined into aluminum valve bodies, cylinder end caps and fittings. Deep-hole capability is L/D = 10, and minimum internal channel width is 3.0 mm. Intersections of cross-holes and assembly hole openings are deburred after machining to reduce subsequent assembly and passage-cleaning problems. Minimum drilled hole diameter is 0.2 mm. Cleaning, plug and sealing requirements are specified together with the part.
Aluminum Turn-Mill Part Inspection: CMM Datum-Based Verification Across Operations
Internal and external fits, radial hole positions and mounting faces on combined turned and milled parts are inspected with a Hexagon Inspector Classic 06.08.06 CMM against rotational datums to verify dimensional relationships across operations. Turned outside diameter and bored hole roughness are checked with a Leader NCA8106 roughness tester. Functional threads are inspected with go/no-go or ring gauges. Anodized fit dimensions can be rechecked against drawing requirements during final inspection.

Why Choose Us
Turning and Milling Equipment and Quality Systems
XCM CNC operates Mazak I-100S, DMG 80mono, Matsuura MX-520 and Brother machining centers for turned and milled features. Its quality systems include ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C.
Supporting Services from Small Connectors to Large Structural Parts
The machining range covers small connectors through large structural parts. Internal and external threading, hole machining, cross-hole deburring and edge breaking can be coordinated with turning and milling. Sandblasting and anodizing can also be arranged together, allowing complete parts to be ordered from one supplier.
Tiered Equipment Strategy for Low-Cost CNC Machining, Quality-Assured Production
XCM CNC groups its CNC equipment into four tiers: mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe and North America. Lower-tolerance operations such as rough turning of outside diameters and general side holes use mainland Chinese or Taiwanese equipment. Bearing registers, mating bores and precision radial hole positions requiring h6/H7 accuracy and 0.015 mm position tolerance use imported machines such as DMG and Mazak. Equipment is matched to each part’s actual accuracy requirements to reduce machining costs while meeting drawing requirements.
Drawing-Based Datum Transfer between Turning and Milling
Combined turned and milled parts require datum pickup when moving from turning to milling. The factory plans workholding and alignment for each operation around the drawing’s datum system, so turned mating surfaces and milled lateral features follow the same dimensional requirements. Prototypes can first verify shaft-to-bore fits and lateral interfaces. Prototypes take 3-7 days, with production taking 10-15 days after approval.
Cross-Hole Deburring and Internal Cleaning Coordinated with Machining
Intersecting holes in valve bodies and fittings can develop internal burrs that affect passage flow and subsequent assembly. Deburring is completed within the machining process, without requiring a separate supplier. Cleaning requirements, plug arrangements and burr standards at pipe connection openings are agreed together with the part to reduce procurement steps.
FAQ
Does a turned and milled aluminum part need to be made in one setup?
Not necessarily. Compact parts with concentrated features can use fewer setups to reduce datum transfer error. Parts with projecting mounting lugs or larger lateral structures may require separate operations. The route is selected according to part features and related dimensional requirements.
Can radial holes be positioned from the central bore on an aluminum turn-mill part?
Yes. Radial holes can be machined and inspected using a specified central bore or mating outside diameter as the datum, with position tolerance of 0.015 mm. If hole direction and axial location affect lateral connections, specify the datums and position requirements on the drawing. A CMM checks related dimensions against the rotational datum.
Can you supply aluminum parts with intersecting fluid passages?
Yes. Axial, lateral and intersecting holes can be machined with deep-hole capability of L/D = 10, along with cross-hole deburring. Specify passage cleaning, plug and sealing requirements for the project. Leak-test arrangements depend on project and order requirements.
Can wrench flats be milled on a turned aluminum connector without distorting the bore?
Cutting and clamping forces during wrench-flat milling can deform thin-walled sections. Finish turning of the mating bore is completed before milling, and milling parameters and workholding are adjusted to the wall thickness. A CMM rechecks bore roundness and fit dimensions after machining. Roundness capability is 0.006 mm.
How is the angular orientation of radial holes indexed on an aluminum turned part?
Radial hole angular positions are controlled by C-axis indexing of the turning spindle or fixture positioning during milling. Specify the required angle relative to a datum face or keyway on the drawing. Machining and inspection use the same angular datum.
Can you quote large parts that require both turning and milling?
Yes. Submit large-part drawings for evaluation. Turning capacity is diameter 1250 mm at a workpiece length of 2000 mm, while 3-axis milling machine travel is 3000 x 1600 x 1400 mm. Actual combined-part capacity depends on lateral features, fixtures and tool access. The two size ranges apply to their respective processes.
Can you machine an aluminum motor end cap with both a bearing bore and bolt-circle holes?
Yes. The central register and bearing bore are turned, while the bolt-hole pattern and mounting lugs are milled, controlling register coaxiality and bolt-circle position tolerance. Face runout is 0.012 mm and bolt-hole pattern position tolerance is 0.015 mm. Anodized fit dimensions can be rechecked during final inspection.
