Stainless Steel Impeller Blade Thickness and 0.02 mm Profile Control

Stainless steel impellers can reach a maximum diameter of 800 mm and a minimum blade thickness of 0.6 mm. Complex surface profile tolerance can reach 0.02 mm. Profile requirements are specified using ISO 1101 or ASME Y14.5, with datums defined in the 3D model. Thin 0.6 mm blades are prone to deformation and chatter. They are processed as thin-walled features using blank pretreatment, aging for stress relief and layered machining.

Stainless Steel Multi-Face Parts Machined in One Setup on a 5-Axis Machine

Maximum 5-axis machining size is 800 x 600 x 900 mm, while maximum multi-face machining size in one setup is 600 x 1200 x 500 mm. Machining inclined faces and holes in multiple directions in the same setup reduces errors from datum transfer. Hole-pattern position tolerance is 0.015 mm and perpendicularity is 0.02 mm / 1000 mm. Actual achievable values depend on the datums and part orientation.

Stainless Steel Undercuts, Deep Cavities and Minimum Corner Radius

Stainless steel parts with undercuts and deep cavities first require a tool and toolholder access check. The minimum end-milled internal corner radius is R0.5 mm. Maximum cavity depth-to-width ratio is 4:1, extending to 5:1 with longer tools. For a 40 mm deep cavity, an internal corner radius of at least R1.0 mm is recommended. Fully sharp internal corners require EDM or a design adjustment.

Stainless Steel Freeform Surface Inspection by CMM, 3D Scan and Profile Check

Contoured parts are inspected with a Hexagon Inspector Classic 06.08.06 CMM. Complex parts can also undergo 3D scanning and profile inspection. Blade thickness, 0.02 mm profile tolerance and hole positions are checked against the same datum system. Third-party inspection reports can be issued according to order requirements when needed. Local polished areas achieve Ra 0.2 um, while precision-polished critical areas can reach Ra 0.015 um, with the applicable areas limited by the drawing.

Applications

Pump Impellers and Housings for Chemical and Energy Applications

Typical parts: Pump Impellers, Contoured Pump Housings

Impellers move fluid, while pump housings contain passages and connect seal components. Grade 316 or 316L can be selected for fluid-contact areas. 5-axis machining produces curved blades, surfaces between blades and sealing interfaces in different directions. Relevant capabilities: maximum impeller diameter 800 mm, minimum blade thickness 0.6 mm and surface profile tolerance 0.02 mm.

Robot End-Effector Mounting Structures for Washdown Environments

Typical parts: Multi-Directional Mounts, Contoured End-Effector Brackets

Mounts and end-effector brackets secure tools or sensors at specified angles. Inclined mounting faces and locating holes in multiple directions can be machined in one setup. Stainless steel with passivation can be selected for damp or washdown environments. Relevant capabilities: hole-pattern position tolerance 0.015 mm and perpendicularity 0.02 mm / 1000 mm.

Contoured Medical Instrument Housings and Guides

Typical parts: Contoured Instrument Housings, Guide Components

Contoured housings accommodate internal instrument components, while angled guide holes direct mating instruments along the designed orientation. Local polished surfaces achieve Ra 0.2 um, and the factory is certified to ISO 13485. The customer specifies material, cleaning conditions and applicable medical standards on the drawing, which we use to evaluate the project.

Aviation Hydraulic Interface Housings and Angled Mounting Components

Typical parts: Hydraulic Interface Housings, Angled Mounting Components

Interface housings connect hydraulic piping, while angled mounting components secure adjacent assemblies. Multi-directional interfaces, inclined faces and complex contours can be evaluated for 5-axis machining from a 3D model. Relevant capabilities: sealing surface roughness Ra 0.8 um and NPT, BSP, G and PT pipe threads. The customer defines on the drawing whether the part is safety-critical or requires special processes.

Why Choose Us

Quality Systems and Equipment for Complex Surface Projects

We have ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and GJB9001C quality systems, with equipment from DMG, Mazak, Matsuura and Brother. Impellers and contoured housings are machined from models and drawings, with specified dimensions and surfaces included in inspection.

5-Axis Machining and Finishing for Parts of Different Sizes

The factory’s range covers small connectors through large structural parts. Complex parts can combine 5-axis machining with necessary grinding, EDM or wire EDM. Passivation and polishing are coordinated with corrosion-resistance and local surface requirements, so contours, interfaces and contact faces are delivered under the same order.

Tiered Equipment Strategy for Low-Cost CNC Machining, Quality-Assured Production

XCM CNC operates four tiers of CNC equipment from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and Europe and North America. Lower-tolerance operations such as impeller blank roughing and general mounting faces can use mainland Chinese or Taiwanese equipment. High-precision blade surface finishing and angled interfaces use imported machines such as DMG and Mazak. Equipment is matched to each part’s actual accuracy requirements, reserving machines with higher hourly costs for demanding operations and reducing machining costs while meeting drawing requirements.

Tool Access and Workholding Evaluated before Quotation

After receiving a STEP or IGES model, we check tool access between blades, at undercuts and at angled holes before proposing a process plan and quotation. Datums for blades, angled holes and critical fits are aligned with the customer during quotation. An NDA can be signed before confidential 3D models are submitted.

Prototype Profile and Blade Thickness Approval before Production

Prototypes typically take 3-7 days. Surface profiles, blade thickness and local polished appearance are checked against the 3D model. Production begins after customer approval and uses the approved machining and inspection methods.

FAQ

Can I request a quote with only a STEP model and no 2D drawing?

A STEP or IGES model can be used for an initial machining evaluation. Critical tolerances, datums and roughness requirements must be specified on PDF or DWG drawings. Also provide grade, quantity, application details and tolerance requirements.

Does every feature need continuous 5-axis machining?

No. Processes are selected by feature. Curved blades, angled interfaces and general mounting faces can use 3-axis, 3+2-axis or 5-axis machining as appropriate. Workholding and the combination of operations depend on geometry, tool clearance and accuracy requirements.

Can I order a single 5-axis stainless impeller as a sample?

Yes. The minimum order is 1 piece, with customization from drawings or samples. Sample lead time is 3-7 days and production typically takes 10-15 days, depending on blade complexity and quantity. Sample approval is required before production.

Should an impeller order include balancing or performance-test requirements?

Dynamic balancing, flow testing and pressure testing are outside the default machining scope. If required, list the standards, methods and acceptance requirements separately so we can evaluate availability. Provide the conveyed medium and operating temperature with the model to support grade selection.

How should a CAD model and 2D drawing define the controlled surfaces?

The model defines surface geometry. The 2D drawing identifies controlled areas, datums and profile requirements and should state both model and drawing revisions. These define the agreed inspection scope for blades, angled holes and faces, and critical fits. Local polishing areas can also be marked on the drawing.

Which inspection and material documents can be supplied for a 5-axis part?

CMM reports, FAI first article reports and material certificates can be supplied. FAI can use the customer’s report format. Complex contoured parts can include 3D scan or profile inspection results, and third-party inspection reports can be issued when needed. Passivated parts can be supplied with passivation reports.
